That is very odd indeed, I haven't heard of anything like that. Does it matter what browser you are using? Can you tell if significant CPU and/or memory resources are being consumed by the notebooks? I can't think of a way that notebooks would interfere with other network communications other than general resource consumption, and idle notebooks shouldn't use much at all.
