I would imagine so but I've never been in Detroit in my
life. As for the music, you are thinking of the Motown Sound
which was a huge factor in our generation. We heard Motown music
on the radio, bought Motown Records along with tons of other
music, but Motown was big.

I always felt good that my parents did not react the way
some kid's parents did about rock-and-roll and Motown music.
They listened to much of the same music that my sister and I did
which is interesting because we almost never listened to music
from my parents' generation although some of the big-band jazz
is pretty good.

In some ways, the music out of Detroit in the sixties is
similar to the explosion of music out of Northern England during
that same time. It was by, for and of young working-class people
and it probably took just the right mix of factors to make it
come together.

On a radio station in 1964 or 1965, you might hear the
Supremes, a Motown group, Marvin Gay, another Motown star,
Smokey Robinson, yet another, then The Beatles or Herman's
Hermits or the Rolling Stones just to name a tiny few.

I remember stories in our news about the pirate radio
stations off the coast of England during the early sixties,
giving the kids what they wanted to listen to while the BBC
acted as if it was still 1943.

Finally, you got Radio 1, etc, plus commercial radio and
you probably now have programming that is as bad as ours is
today for the most part.
