Just to put this in context, I don't think that Scala claims to be a
'modern functional programming language' as such. It's a multi-
paradigm language which "smoothly integrates features of object-
oriented and functional languages". As far as I can see, Scala is
paying homage to OCaml, Haskell etc by injecting functional
programming capability into a language that integrates well with Java
(and Java programmers), rather than competing with them.
