On the contrary, I am building a new VM from scratch with my own money 
precisely because I believe this issue is so important.

If Sun do the work, I will build commercial products on their platform as 
well. Otherwise, I'll stick with their competitors.

If you cannot get tail calls accepted into the required standard, then release 
an additional non-standard JVM that includes the existing implementation of 
tail call elimination (and potentially other useful features).
