Thank you for your reply.

Some other Android IMAP clients (such as Kaiten) do not take a long time to
re-poll, using the same IMAP server and the same folders I described above.
With these clients, the poll counts increment very rapidly from zero to
several hundred in just a few seconds for each folder.

Also, I am using a few IMAP clients under both Windows and Linux with these
same folders on the same IMAP server, and none of these clients re-download
all of the messages in the entire folder every time I refresh. Message
numbers and UID's can easily be kept for each IMAP folder, so that the IMAP
client can quickly determine which messages on the server are new, and then
only download these new messages. This is a relatively quick operation.

Also, I use my IMAP server and my set of IMAP folders under several
environments, and unfortunately, it would defeat my purpose to move the old
messages into separate archive folders ... especially since other IMAP
clients under Android, Windows, and Linux all seem to be able to download
only the newest messages without also re-downloading all of the rest of the
messages in each folder, every time I refresh.

Another thought: I notice that under K-9, if I say that I want to poll for
a short time interval, then the folder stops displaying messages older than
that time interval. Is there a way to specify that the display life of
messages in a folder is different from the poll interval? If so, I could
then specifiy a long display life and a short poll interval, and this would
solve my problem, since the older messages would remain visible in the
folder, even though I would only be polling for very recent messages.

Thank you for your time, and for at least considering the points I've made.
