I'm still plowing through the code in my not-so-ample spare time, and I'm still not sure if my original assessment of the problem is correct, let alone being able to come up with a fix for it, yet. But I'll keep plugging away, and perhaps I'll be able to zero in on the exact cause and fix the problem. In the mean time, I've submitted a bug report. Excelsior!
