Email clients are network agnostic, so if you're having trouble
sending messages (only) via t-mobile with the default android client
it's much more likely a networking than a mail client issue. 

K9 will work fine side-by-side another mail client on your device.
Of course, especially with POP, you have to remember that when you
do things in a mailbox with one client that will change the mailbox
state. So you will need to take that into consideration when
subsequently taking actions against the same mailbox with another
client (where you may have a mailbox view cached).
