You're running an alpha version of the application against a new version
of the operating system. I would suggest that running a stable and
tested version of the code would give you stability.
I'm running K-9 version 4.804 on Android version 4.4.4 with zero issues.
What you may want to do is submit bug reports to the developers so they
can look into the alpha version you're running and incompatibilities
with the OS and/or hardware. If you're going to run alpha software,
however, you cannot expect stability.
