K-9 uses up huge amounts of bandwidth on my device. Over the past two

still reached me almost instantaneously.

What could be the problem? What settings should I be looking at?

Do you have a lot of folders defined? The stock e-mail apps don't check folders for new e-mail (primary reason I switched to k-9).

Look at the settings for how far back you are syncing e-mail.

As you probably already guessed, use push notifications rather than polling.
