Nowadays most providers support STARTTLS to upgrade initially unencrypted IMAP/POP/SMTP sessions. So it's perfectly fine to use IMAP with port 143, as long as STARTTLS is selected under 'Security' in K-9 Mail. The same goes for POP3 and SMTP.
