True, but it relies on other applications to handle PGP/MIME for it.

Why not use OpenKeychain or APG? Both integrate well with K-9, and provide
all the PGP/MIME support one needs, AFAIK.

An alternative email client is R2Mail (or such, not sure of the spelling).
It does S/MIME for sure, and I think it also does PGP/MIME. But if you like
K-9 otherwise, and don't need S/MIME capabilities (only PGP/MIME), it may
be worth giving OpenKeychain or APG a try.
