I use Rackspace's email hosting and am having no issues. They use
ports 993/imap 995/pop and 465 for sending:

 imap:   <http://www.rackspace.com/apps/support/portal/3921>

  pop:   <http://www.rackspace.com/apps/support/portal/3918>

These ports/services do SSL/TLS, not STARTTLS, so there is no
"advertisement", it just starts up in SSL/TLS. Setting
authentication in K9 to those ports and "normal password" works just
fine for me. Your authentication username is your full
username@domain.
