I had many problems with the default droid email. Verizon support recommended K9. K-9 solved all the problems.
The one thing I wanted was to show the count of emails on the K9 icon. So I could see if there were new emails without having to open K-9. I found in the widgets a "K-9 Unread" widget that supposedly displays the count. However, when I select it, unlike the other widgets it does not place it on the phone's screen. Instead it opens K-9. When you exit K-9 you can see the widget but it disappears in less than a second. I emailed K-9 support but their auto reply said to check here.
