I think that when it opens K-9, you need to select one of your email accounts. 
The reason is that for those of us who manage more than one account through K-9 
(I have 8), you can have a separate widget for each account, and it shows how 
many unread messages there are for each account on its own widget. You can also 
have a widget for the Unified Mailbox.
