Are you using different WiFi connections at times, as well as your cellular
data service? If sometimes you are connecting via one network, which allows
connecting to port 25 on a remote server, and at other times are using a
different connection that blocks port 25, this might explain the varied
results. If you try sending a message via K-9, and it is blocked, immediately
try sending a message via the built-in mail program and see if it is blocked
also.
