I believe that most of those issues that you are seeing reported are
from last november/december and due to a change in how K-9 supported
STARTTLS. With the release of K-9 4.905, or a bit earlier, K-9
started enforcing STARTTLS, and dropped the "if available" option.
This meant that people who had previously configured their K-9
accounts with "STARTTLS - if available", but whose providers' didn't
actually support STARTTLS, started seeing connection failures after
an upgrade.

In your case, your mail server does support STARTTLS (but only with
TLSv1 and above). The error screenshot that you sent indicated that
there was a protocol mismatch, but you "withdrew" that as it was for
ssl/tls on 587, which won't work. I don't believe I've seen an
explicit indication of the error that you are seeing with
STARTTLS/587 when using celldata.
