They do get deleted eventually. I suspect that if a background fetch or other processing is going on (note the unintelligible mumbling in the header), delete is taken care of later. Also, if you hit it just right, you'll get a No Text and have to back up to the folder and pick another message to display; you can't navigate back or forward out of that state.
