Use the, generally square, icon at the bottom of your device (to the
left or right of the home button) to show "recents". From that
screen you can swipe an item to close it. It may also have an "X" in
the upper-right that you can use. 

That approach appears to unload apps -- e.g., I use it with K9 when
it's spinning trying to get to my mail server. It doesn't work with
everything, e.g. tune-in, and the settings/apps/<app>/force stop
approach is more definitive, but it seems to work with most things
that I use.
