I believe that this issue was resolved for K-9 about 10 days ago
with the release of 5.006 (stable) and 5.107 (alpha). 

It doesn't look like Kaiten, which has distribution and support
channels separate from K-9's, has been updated in a bit so I'm not
surprised you're encountering a problem. You might want to try the
email and website support options listed on the PlayStore page:

to report your issues with Kaiten.
