I had the same problem for about a week. I tried recreating data, only saving 100 messages, compacting account, and nothing worked. Until I turned off using names from Contacts in the display. Works fine now. I have a very large and screwed up contacts list because Verizon backs them up and restores them, as does Google, but they end up creating duplicates.
My guess is a large contacts list now causes K9 mail to slow down to where it is unusable. Not using the list seems to be the workaround.
