As far as I have been able to tell, these selections are held by the app that you selected, not the app that you were using (this isn't a K-9 specific issue). How you reset them varies a bit based on the android OS (and vendor customization) that you are using. I think most recent Android releases have an option under the system "apps" setting that lets you clear all preferences by selecting "apps" and then opening the options (upper right). You should see "reset app preferences" as an option. That will reset any/all "app opening" preferences you have set. With Samsung's customization, at least with Android 5+, there's a "default applications" system menu option. Selecting that will show you individual app preference setting, so you can clear things individually.
