If you have the option (and it's exceeding rare that you don't), you
should really switch to IMAP. POP3 is a very old and outdated protocol
that assumes there is only one client connecting to it. It's even in the
name: Post Office Protocol. The "Post Office" server delivers you your
"letter," and now you have it and the Post Office deletes it. The whole
leaving messages on the server thing is a hack to try and make POP3 work
with multiple clients.

So basically, switch to IMAP and your life will be much better.
