Richard and Seth, Thanks for the help - I tried all your suggestions, and now I have it working. I think the problem was with the way k-9 mail was treating the dates in my various gmail folders, because they all showed nothing after January 20, which is when I went to 2 factor auth with gmail. I found the newer items mixed in with older items when I refreshed and added more older items to each folder. The new ones were showing up with today's date and time, but mixed in with items from last December or early January. Refreshing alone did not work, but refreshing and resorting by date seems to have restored order.
Very weird. The tip off was Seth's email, which showed up in the correct folder, but positioned several days earlier than my January 20 emails. It was still positioned in my most recent 25 (which is all I retrieve on my phone) so i saw it. Richard's did not show up until I loaded another 25, and found it positioned with emails from mid December. Thanks again for the help.
