I haven't seen this with my nexus-5/android-6 device. What kind of device? Is this happening with all messages, or only some? On text-part only messages (e.g., the ones that I send to this list), or only messages with an html part? Device orientation specific? With my desktop client, badly formed html messages won't display. K-9's html rendering is rather better, but if it's just "now and then" it could be that someone is sending you very badly formed html messages.
