I have managed to keep k9 from dozing. So I am happier now.
On my Samsung S7 edge ...
settings
battery
battery usage button top right
more button top right
Optimize battery usage menu option
Select 'all apps' from drop down
Then turn it off for K9

Thinking about htis a bit more, I don't mind that it dozes, but it is
really annoying that the only way to get it out of doze mode is to force
stop and rerun. Hence my suggestion of an exit option, or how about a
'check network' ideally this would be automatic once we have left 'quiet
time'
