My HTC 8 would automatically sync email in K9 via an IMAP account, it would 
notify me every time it arrives.
On my HTC 10 it won't do that. I turned off battery optimization for K9. 
That only resulted in receiving email when unlocking my phone.
You can change polling to 1 minute but that's draining the battery.
