There are two issues: how the mail is sent, via SMTP whether the MUA puts a copy of the mail in the sent folder If you have gmail configured as IMAP, as I would expect, then by default k-9 places a copy of outgoing mail in the Sent folder. Under Settings/Account/Folders/Sent, you can select "-NONE-" to disable this. (I find it strange you are ok with incoming but not outgoing mail on gmail.
