C.Bernard:

Hello! I think the answer is (sorry) both "yes" and
"no". Kaboodle's VPN capability is what I call a "Personal VPN",
distinguishing it from a commercial-grade VPN solution (such as
IPSec or PPTP). With a Kaboodle VPN connection, you can run a
specific, limited set of applications from one LAN to another
across the Internet. Right now that set of applications is
limited to file-transfer, remote-control (via VNC), remote
web-management, and network discovery. We can add additional
applications to this list, but that would require that we customize
a "wrapper" layer within Kaboodle.

With a commercial-grade VPN (such as OpenSwan.com), on the
other hand, a VPN client is connected to the LAN of the VPN Server
for *all* TCP/IP connections. Even web-browser traffic will "emerge"
onto the Internet as if it originated from the VPN Server's network,
not from the VPN client's. This way, no "custom wrappers" need to
be built for any TCP/IP application. The downside is that commercial
VPN connection is much more difficult to get setup and running than
a Kaboodle Personal-VPN connection.

I hope that helps somewhat. Depending on the complexity of
your required application, you might find that a commercial VPN is
what you really need. Or, alternatively, you might find that you
can use Kaboodle to securely "remote access" the database PC's LAN,
and then run the required database client on one of that LAN's PC's.

        Good luck!
