The easy trick is to add an explicit dependency on .config like this: $(obj)/foobar.o: .config We use a similar way of doing things in kernel/Makefile whre we parse up the content of the .config file. That said I would question your use of CONFIG variables but without knowing the actual context it is hard to see why such obsfucating is needed.
