Flipping back to 100% after starting the app with menu opacity at 50% works on Mac as far as I can tell. I'll test under X11 tomorrow. It would be good if this patch was tested on more than a single system before going in. I started noticing the freeze after updating to 16.12.0 and then a few days later, to Qt 5.7.1 . I think I downgraded to see if it was related to the upgrade but can't remember the outcome of that test.
