Regarding Wayland-specific difficulties, is it of interest that labwc supports
window shading? Their general approach to Wayland protocols is stated as:

> Labwc only understands wayland-protocols & wlr-protocols,
> and cannot be controlled with dbus, sway/i3-IPC, or other technology.
> The reason for this is that we believe that custom IPCs and protocols
> create a fragmentation that hinders general Wayland adoption.

Their description of the shade action:

> Set, unset, or toggle, respectively, the "shaded" state of the active window.
> When shaded, window contents are hidden, leaving only the titlebar visible.
> Full-screen windows or those without server-side decorations
> (including those for which the server-side titlebar has been hidden)
> are not eligible for shading.
