Before the change, this was still there, but it was underline below the text, not a rectangle around the item. The background change indicates the selection. The only things that changed was the visuals, the behavior is the same as before. I'm not saying your experience is invalid though, thanks for the feedback. We may need to iterate on this more to get a more clear distinction between keyboard focus and regular selection.
