Then perhaps this is a UX issue, or maybe a weird bug just affecting my
specific hardware, but I cannot manage to do what you suggest.

Can you help me with more detailed steps how to do this?

1. Connect external projector
2. Switch to mirror mode
3. ???

I have tried setting the external projector as the primary screen instead of
the built-in, changed manually the resolution. Nothing seems to work as I want,
which is to use the best native resolution for the external screen/projector
and do the best possible mirror in the built-in mirror (at the possible cost of
lower resolution, horizontal black lines in my case, etc.)
