SUMMARY
I have several original (2001) Xbox controllers that I'm trying to test in
Plasma > System Settings > Game Controller. There are several issues (probably
all related). Note that I know the controllers are working fine in general,
tested on an original Xbox and in Linux using jstest. In case you're not aware,
the original Xbox controller uses USB with a proprietary plug - you can buy or
make a simple adapter that converts one plug type to another, just connecting
wires together, no active electronics.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Plug in an original Xbox controller into the PC, using a suitable adapter
2. Run System Settings, Game Controller
3. Press buttons etc and note the results
OBSERVED RESULT
Things that work OK:
- Left and right analog stick positions
- Left and right trigger positions
- A, B, X, Y button presses
- Back button presses
- D-pad positions as axes 7 and 8 (but see below)
Things that show no response at all:
- Start, White, and Black button presses
Things that are very wacky:
The left and right analog stick click presses are very odd. Pressing either of
them individually shows no effect. However, if you press both at the same, the
KCM will show the right analog stick (only) is pressed.
Similarly, for the D-pad, although they show up as axes OK, they are also
listed as individual buttons, but that isn't working right. Pressing individual
directions shows no response in the KCM. But if you press up and right at the
same time (i.e. press diagonally), the KCM will show that D-pad right (only) is
pressed.
EXPECTED RESULT
Everything shown correctly, i.e.:
- Left and right analog stick positions
- Left and right trigger positions
- Left and right analog stick click presses
- A, B, X, Y, Back, Start, White, Black button presses
- D-pad as both axes and button presses
