SUMMARY

Over the time, I have paired my computer with a lot of Bluetooth devices. In
the Bluetooth applet, they are sorted alphabetically. Finding a device requires
scrolling and skimming. And by the way, when connecting one, the reorder to put
currently connected devices first in the list causes confusing jumps, and the
reorder is especially annoying when connecting a device doesn't work the first
time and takes several tries.

Recently connected Bluetooth devices are usually the ones you are the more
likely to want to connect at any point in time:
- a headset or a speaker you use daily
- the speaker of some friend you are spending the weekend with

I see a few strategies that would make things smoother:

(a) sorting the list from the most recently to the least recently connected
(b) having a "recent devices" list of configurable size (5 by default) on top
of the alphabetically ordered list
(c) having a search field that filters using the name of the device or its mac
address (the mac address possibility wouldn't hurt and could occasionally come
in handy for more technical people). This allows finding devices which are not
recent without having to skim the list.

To be honest, I don't really like (a), it would be a mess to find something on
this list which is not at the very top. (b+c) would be my preference.

With (b), a nice side effect is that the alphabetical list doesn't need to be
jump-reordered when connecting a device anymore: the device would appear in the
recent devices list at the top and that's it. The device would appear twice in
the two list.

A workaround that should work for most often used devices would be to put a
prefix which would put them first in the alphabetically sorted list. That
solves a part of the issue but:
- it doesn't help for "weekend speaker" use case
- one has to come up with this trick, and actually, it only occurred to me
while writing this ticket.

For (b), the recent device list could be configured to be the most often used
device list instead (requiring counting the number of connections). Configuring
the size to zero would make the list completely disappear.

WDYT?
