Update: managed to have it register the S-Pen button for this field, which
it actually detects as '@' key instead of MMB.

This still does not fix the issue though, as the '@' input from the button
is seemingly the part being incorrectly detected - when pen is far from
tablet / not in motion.

I am unsure if the device is an S-Pen or S-Pen pro, it is the one that came
with the Tab S9U

Update 2: realised there was a mouse button option, have now registered MMB
to toggle eraser.
This fixes the issue ONLY when the S-Pen is in hover mode, however the
middle button is still inconsistent when further from the screen based on
movement.

I have additionally tried fully disabled air actions for krita in my
tablet's settings, but this seems to fully disable it detecting the button
press, so I was unable to use the S-Pen button at all in this state.
By default, the middle button was panning the canvas when pressed &
hovering but I disabled this in 'Pan Canvas'
