This is not just about personal habit. I have tried tens of PDF readers and all
except Okular give users two ways to highlight text: you (a) select the
highlighter tool and then drag the highlighter across text; or (b) pre-select
text and then activate the highlighter to highlight the pre-selected text.
Okular does only (a). The vast majority of readers (including Firefox) support
both methods with preference to (b).

(b) is more useful because you can pre-select text more precisely before you
highlight it. You can even use Ctrl+arrows to adjust your selection (not
possible yet in Okular). For accessibility alone, this method would be
essential. It is the well-established method many PDF users are already
familiar with. Speaking from experience, if you are used to this method, Okular
is incredibly annoying. It is consistent with the principle that in various
applications you select text first and then press Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I etc to format
it. It also improves efficiency in certain scenarios eg you can select text,
press Ctrl+C to copy it, and then, say, Ctrl+H to highlight it. To select text
you can even use double-click and triple-click as normal.

In method (b) you can typically activate the highlighter by pressing a toolbar
button, pressing a key combination (eg Ctrl+H) or clicking 'Highlight this' in
a context menu that appears when you right-click on the selected text (that
would appear neatly alongside the current Copy Text, Speak Text and Search
Text)
