It just happened again, even without a high load. Restarting plasmashell solved the issue even with keeping the unlimited update frequency. I'm now wondering whether it could be related to ksystemstats crashing : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521353 , because that happened a few minutes before I noticed the CPU usage.
