Bug ID: 521506
Summary: Microphone volume is unusually low even though set to
100% on boot, unless a workaround is done
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.6.5
Reported In:
Platform: Bazzite
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Audio Volume widget
Assignee: [email protected]

Target Milestone: 1.0
DESCRIPTION
I have recently purchased a USB microphone, Audio-Technica ATR2100x to be
exact. After testing it out by recording with OBS, I noticed that the volume
seemed rather low.
After checking the input percentage, I saw that it was set to 100% by default.
That left me scratching my head... but then I thought, maybe I can play around
with the volume slider and see if it changes anything.
And what do you know, going from 100% to 95% and back to 100% input gain in the
Audio Volume section does bring up the volume to a good level.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Boot the computer
2. Use something like OBS to see the microphone volume level
3. Notice that it is unusually low, even though the Audio Volume says it is set
at 100%
OBSERVED RESULT
Low microphone volume.
EXPECTED RESULT
Louder microphone volume.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System (available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a
terminal window): Bazzite
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.26.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Based on the OBS volume level, before at 100% microphone volume was peaking at
-30 db, after doing the trick it goes up to -18 db. Pretty huge.
I shut down the PC, booted it back up but the same problem still persits. I
have to manually reduce the volume and increase it back to 100% to actually get
100% of the volume.
Tried both USB 2, USB 3 ports, same problem.
I have another USB microphone I used before, and this problem did not happen.
It is a LifeCam HD-3000 webcam. Granted, it always sits at 50% input volume as
that is enough to get decent gain. I tried playing around with the volume
slider too, but did not see any change in input volume, as I did with the
ATR2100x.
PS the volume can be reduced to any percentage, it does not have to be from 95%
to 100%. It just has to be changed in order for the effect to take place.
