            Bug ID: 521999
Summary: Content sharpening while zooming causes stuttering and
input delay on intel i915 driver
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First 6.7.0
       Reported In:
          Platform: CachyOS
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: performance
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

DESCRIPTION
Between Kwin 6.6.5 and 6.7.0 a new text upsacle/sharpening feature was
introduced to the zoom plugin which is enabled by default. This unfortunately
causes severe frame drops whenever using the zoom desktop effect on integrated
intel graphics using the i915 driver. AMDGPU and the official nvidia drivers
are also affected but much less so. It is especially apparent on an 144Hz
monitor.

This issue appeared immediately after updating to Plasma 6.7. Disabling text
sharpening fixes the issue.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. under systemsettings, enable "sharpen screen content while zoomed in" under
Accessibility > Zoom & Magnifier
2. choose a less fast animation speed to better see the FPS drops
3. Enable full desktop zoom
4. pan, interact with the desktop

OBSERVED RESULT
Visibly low and unstable FPS and increased input delay

EXPECTED RESULT
high and stable FPS with minimal input delay

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: CachyOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The problematic feature was introduced with commit 0aab86031b. Maybe it would
be better to not have it enabled by default?
