I did try rebooting the VM. but only once or twice, most were trying things in kicker itself, as that would be more logical for something like that to even possibly happen. 5 reboots, nothing. 5 cold starts and I was just about to switch to try having it sleep, and it happened - no results when searching! Like for Tracey, restarting plasma fixed it though.
