Bug ID: 523521
Summary: Allow selecting a specific region of screen when
screenshot is requested
Classification: Plasma
Product: xdg-desktop-portal-kde
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED

Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
When an application requests a screenshot, the user gets a pop-up to choose
what type of screenshot to share. But currently, there are only 3 options:
"Full screen", "Current screen", and "Active window". There is no option to
share only a specific portion of the screen.
I have marked this as a major severity issue because we need to share more than
what we want, to a particular application. Let's say an application wants to
scan a QR code from a website. There may be some sensitive data on the page
apart from the QR code. But with the current implementation, we have to share
the screenshot of the whole window to the application.
Therefore, a separate option to share a specific region is required, as present
on other portal implementations such as Gnome.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 6.18.39-1-lts (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz
Memory: 8 GiB of RAM (7.2 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: Intel® HD Graphics 2500
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
There is already support for selecting a specific region of the screen for
screencasts. The same should be done for the screenshot portal. Additionally,
the screenshot portal UI and workflow can be made similar to that of the
screencast portal.
