I was using digikam 9.1 the last few days and this is still a problem. It
causes the interface to be very jumpy, cause inaccurate clicks (prompting
people to ask for an "undo" feature here?).
A possible solution would be to add a button when there's new information
(detected/recognised faces/ tags)  to update the current view. It may even be
provided when switching focus from one face thumbnail to another, to inform the
user of a needed refresh.
But the current situation with jumpyness, the inability to type into the name
field when updates are being done in the background is not very enjoyable.
