            Bug ID: 523716
Summary: Opengl ES performs worse than normal Opengl.
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First master
       Reported In:
          Platform: Arch Linux
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: performance
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

DESCRIPTION
OpenGL ES is not good for older systems; it's horrible compared to normal
OpenGL from what I've seen testing it on my Ivy Bridge system.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use plasma 6.8 dev.
2. Or force enable OpenGL ES on Plasma 6.7 using KWIN_COMPOSE=02ES in
/etc/environment.

OBSERVED RESULT
Experience worse desktop performance; scrolling look sluggish, and minimizing
and maximizing windows animation look sluggish even in web browsing.

EXPECTED RESULT

normal performance.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System (archlinux):
KDE Plasma Version: master
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.29.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A really good way of testing and comparing is opening a high-resolution image
and scrolling up and down inside Okular on a normal Plasma 6.7 session, then
enabling KWIN_COMPOSE=O2ES, logging out, and logging in again and doing the
same test, and the difference in performance is instantly clear. On Plasma 6.8
dev because that defaults to OpenGL ES and there doesn't seem to be a fallback
to normal OpenGL, it's not possible to use normal OpenGL anymore, so it's
always laggy by default.

I built plasma 6.8 master workspace from source using kdesrc-build i can switch
to it using login screen.
