SUMMARY
In the Grid view, dragging a desktop moves all of its windows onto the desktop
you drop them on. There is no way to change the position of the desktop itself,
so the arrangement of desktops can only be rebuilt by moving their contents
around.
That is a reasonable action to have, but it is the only thing a drag does
there, and it is not what one expects after learning that desktops are ordered.
Deleting a desktop from the middle shifts everything after it one place to the
left; putting the arrangement back means dragging the windows of every affected
desktop, one desktop at a time, and the desktop that ends up empty is still in
the wrong place.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Have four or more virtual desktops with windows on them.
2. Open the Grid view.
3. Drag one desktop onto another, intending to change their order.
OBSERVED RESULT
The windows of the dragged desktop are moved to the target desktop. The
desktops keep their positions; one of them is now empty.
EXPECTED RESULT
A way to reorder the desktops themselves, so that the grid can be rearranged
directly. Moving all windows at once is worth keeping - it is useful - so the
two need to be distinguishable, for instance by dragging the desktop's frame or
label rather than its contents, by holding a modifier, or through a context
menu with "Move left" / "Move right".
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The plumbing already exists: VirtualDesktopManager::moveVirtualDesktop() and
VirtualDesktopModel's handling of desktopMoved are in place, and I have just
proposed exposing them to QML with drag reordering for the Overview desktop bar
in https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/9832 (bug 478073). Once
VirtualDesktopModel has move(), the Grid needs only the gesture, not new
machinery.
This is filed separately from 478073 because that one is specifically about the
desktop bar in Overview, while this is about the Grid view and has to coexist
with the existing move-all-windows drag.
