As reported previously, I am actually on the KDE-Plasma version 6.6.6. Maybe unread notifications got discontinued? When I click on the notification icon in the taskbar, the icon is considered unimportant again after closing the popup (it disappears into the faded out submenu at least) and it displays that there are no unread notifications (when hovering in the submenu). When a new notification comes in, when hovering it again says that there is a new notification. Maybe it does not have the concept of individual unread notifications but counts how many went in since the last time the icon was clicked? So a concrete example would be when you had no notifications and then get the notification about a finished file transfer. Because of the (new) notification, the notification icon gets displayed in the task bar because it is considered important now. Maybe I wasn't at the computer during the transfer or just didn't pay attention to new notifications coming in, so I would wonder if there is a new important notification and would have to check the notifications I got. I do not want to disable the option to let notifications about file transfers into the notification list because I want to be able to interact with the notification, in this case open the path the files were copied to in the file explorer Dolphin. Therefore, I would like to be able to configure the system to behave like no new notification came in in terms of the notification icon placement on a per-app basis or maybe even for each event separately.
