            Bug ID: 525922
Summary: plasmashell loses panel and desktop containments after
resuming from suspend on X11 with Intel Arc (xe
                    driver)
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: plasmashell
      Version First 6.7.5
       Reported In:
          Platform: openSUSE
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Screen locking
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: 1.0

Upon waking from sleep (suspend), the HDMI connection briefly registers a
disconnect/reconnect cycle (XRandR RRNotify_OutputChange).
Plasmashell does not crash, but screenCount drops to 0, emitting:
"requesting unexisting screen available rect -1"
The panel and wallpaper disappear completely and never return unless
plasmashell is restarted.

  ### System Information:

  • Distribution: openSUSE Tumbleweed (release 20260915)
  • KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
  • Session Type: X11 (startplasma-x11)
  • Kernel Version: 7.2.5-1-default
  • GPU: Intel Corporation Battlemage G21 [Arc B580]
  • Kernel Driver: xe
  • Display Configuration: Single 1080p monitor connected via HDMI (HDMI-3 @
75Hz)
  ──────
  ### Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Log into a KDE Plasma 6 session on X11 with an Intel Arc GPU (using the xe
kernel driver).
  2. Put the computer to sleep (Suspend).
  3. Wake / resume the system from sleep (or allow the monitor to wake up from
DPMS power saving).
  ──────
  ### Observed Result:

  • During the resume phase, the HDMI link briefly renegotiates, causing XRandR
to report an instantaneous disconnect/reconnect cycle (Disconnected followed by
Connected).
  • plasmashell does not crash (no SIGSEGV / coredump is generated; DrKonqi is
not triggered).
  • However, plasmashell drops its internal screen references:
      • Evaluating qdbus6 org.kde.plasmashell /PlasmaShell
org.kde.PlasmaShell.evaluateScript "print(screenCount)" returns 0.
      • The panel and desktop containments are completely unmapped/destroyed.
      • In wmctrl -l, both plasmashell and Desktop @ QRect(...) windows vanish.
  • The panels and desktop wallpaper never return automatically unless
plasmashell is manually restarted.
  ──────
  ### Expected Result:

plasmashell should detect the reconnected output via XRandR/KScreen and
rebuild or remap the panels and desktop containment views onto the restored
screen.
  ──────
  ### Relevant Journal Logs:

During wake-up, KScreen launcher notes the rapid output change:

    kscreen_backend_launcher: RRNotify_OutputChange
    kscreen_backend_launcher: Output: 70
    kscreen_backend_launcher: Connection: "Disconnected"
    ...
    kscreen_backend_launcher: Output 70 : connected = false , enabled = true
    ...
    kscreen_backend_launcher: RRNotify_OutputChange
    kscreen_backend_launcher: Output: 70
    kscreen_backend_launcher: Connection: "Connected"

  Immediately afterward, plasmashell logs:

plasmashell[PID]: requesting unexisting screen available rect -1

  At this point:

  • KWin still sees the screen correctly (Number of Screens: 1 (HDMI-3)).
  • kscreen-doctor -o and xrandr see the connected output.
  • Only plasmashell remains in a zombie state with screenCount: 0.
  ──────
  ### Current Workaround:

Restarting plasmashell via systemctl --user restart
plasma-plasmashell.service (or plasmashell --replace) restores the desktop and
panels immediately.
