I tested the first scenario. Even after unmounting the external drive after the reboot opening Dolphin shows the error message and the free size of Home. Tried also without safe removing the drive inside kde during the reboot to remove the drive. Opening Dolphin shows again the error message. I consider even the second scenario problematic and again the status bar shows irrelevant info. I didn't test the second comment due to hardware problems.
