Bug ID: 526296
Summary: Sharing WPA3 wifi using QR codes from one KDE machine
to another does not work
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.7.5
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Networks widget
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
DESCRIPTION
One of my KDE machines is connected to my WPA3-only hotspot. I tried to share
that wifi connection to my laptop using the QR codes feature by just holding up
my laptop's webcam to my desktop monitor. It was able to read the QR code but
it could not connect. The error message says:
"802-11-wireless-security.key-mgmt: Access point does not support PSK but
setting requires it"
I then tried using the QR code from my Android phone and that worked just fine.
Comparing the two strings from the QR codes I noticed that there was a slight
difference
KDE gives: WIFI:S:FakeSSID;T:WPA;P:fakepw1234;;
Android gives: WIFI:S:FakeSSID;T:SAE;P:fakepw1234;H:false;;
I think the issue is that, with the first string, KDE is trying to connect to
the wifi using WPA2-PSK and not SAE. I know that KDE using `T:WPA` is a result
of bug 514026 being fixed, but I don't think that works for WPA3-only wifi
spots. WPA3 spec says that `R:1` is used to specify SAE-only, perhaps that's
what's missing here?
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect one KDE machine to a WPA3 SAE-only wifi hotspot
2. Use the QR code scanning feature on another KDE machine to share that wifi
connection
3. Click connect
OBSERVED RESULT
Connection fails with "802-11-wireless-security.key-mgmt: Access point does not
support PSK but setting requires it"
EXPECTED RESULT
Connection succeeds
