Screen recording of DNS settings being cleared after leaving the menu, even
when it is applied.
DESCRIPTION
I wanted to get encrypted DNS with Quad9 working. Quad9's official settings say
I have to insert "tls://dns.quad9.net" or "https://dns.quad9.net/dns-query"
somewhere in the WiFi settings.
https://quad9.net/service/service-addresses-and-features/#rec
On KDE, putting this in the "DNS servers" field under "IPv4" and "IPv6 (and
reconnecting the network) will work, but they don't persist graphically,
because when leaving the window and going back it's no longer there.
Tangentially, it can still be found as an "invisible field" in the DNS servers
dialog, see the video attachment for more info.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open "Networks" System Tray.
2. Expand the currently connected network.
3. Click "Configure..."
4. Go to IPv4 tab.
5. Then, use Method: Automatic (Only addresses). This will enable fully
changing the system DNS.
6. Then, go fill in https://dns.quad9.net/dns-query or tls://dns.quad9.net in
the DNS Servers field.
6.5. Now navigate to another window in the settings, like the firewall, and
back to the IPv4 settings, and it's no longer there.
The following steps are to reproduce the DNS connection being set to Quad9
(even though the GUI did not persist):
7. Do the same for IPv6 and click apply. Then disconnect and reconnect to the
network to actually it apply.
8. In Firefox, make sure DNS over HTTPS is off.
9. Go to a website like https://mullvad.net/en/check to check your DNS servers.
This will show Quad9.
OBSERVED RESULT
DNS Servers field doesn't show the previously filled URL.
EXPECTED RESULT
DNS Servers shows the previously filled URL. Or stopped me from filling it in.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: KDE Linux 2026-10-08 10:48
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.32.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Apply button might not let you apply sometimes. This is fixed by going to
another settings menu (like Firewall), then back and applying again.
I could also reproduce this on CachyOS and Nura.
